In February of 2021, the International Space Station became the new home of the HPE Spaceborne Computer-2. This is the first time a regular, non-radiation-hardened server has been sent to space to function as a data center. Because most of the technology in space is from the 1990s, and developing hardened computers takes years, this launch of modern technology on the space station marks an interesting shift toward trying to use off-the-shelf hardware for quicker upgrades.
