Installing servers on rails is convenient because you don’t have to maneuver the data center lift as close to the server rack. You just get the server in the general vicinity, extend the platform on rails out to meet your data center lift platform, and make the transfer.
At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.
In reality, rail systems can be tricky. You need to come in at the exact correct angle for the transfer to go smoothly. That angle can be hard to hit if the IT equipment is not positioned perfectly. Even if you do find the perfect spot, workers may still have to lift the edges of the server to find the entry angle required to make it onto the rails.
That manual lift can introduce opportunities for dangerous mishaps. Smashed fingers, wrenched backs, injured shoulders, and damage to your expensive IT equipment could all occur if the transfer from the server handling device to the rail system goes awry.
