Current Status of Global Shipping and Fulfillment

COVID-19 significantly impacted—and is still impacting—global shipping and fulfillment. Those involved in the global supply chain had to make quick changes in an environment of lockdowns and restrictions, to try to get manufacturers and retailers the products they needed as quickly as possible.

But big challenges exist. Many of these challenges have been 20 years in the making. As companies embraced lean manufacturing, they moved their in-house supply chains abroad, where their components could be manufactured at a fraction of the cost.

Globalizing Supply Chains Increased Risks

Companies always faced inherent risks, even before COVID-19, in globalizing their supply chains: supplier disruptions, labor disputes/strikes, extreme weather, and cyberattacks. As they became aware of how easily their supply chains could be disrupted, companies began to reconsider globalizing them.

COVID-19 brought global shipping and fulfillment front and center for companies. The pandemic exposed structural problems with global supply chains. The effects of supply chain disruptions were almost immediate.

One example is personal protection equipment (PPE). In the last decade, most PPE manufacturing has been globalized. High demand for PPE during the pandemic has been a necessity for healthcare workers around the world, including in the U.S.

From healthcare facilities inventories to the national disaster inventory, it became clear that a just-in-time system was no match for a pandemic. And, because demand was so high, overseas suppliers couldn’t ramp up production fast enough to meet it. Additionally, the shipping time for this PPE equipment was typically several weeks.

The Current Snag in the Global Supply Chain

The global supply chain depends largely on container shipping. The way container shipping works is that several different companies use brokers to buy space for their products. The container doesn’t leave port until it is full, which causes delays.

Right now, the global supply chain is experiencing a logjam in the shipping container sector. There are so many shipping containers on the water that large ports all over the world, including in the U.S., are congested. Shipping containers bringing products in can’t get to ports in a timely manner and shipping containers carrying products out can’t leave ports in a timely manner.

Obviously, this impacts global fulfillment. In addition, there aren’t as many containers available to use for shipping. Ecommerce sales have exponentially boomed during the past year and a half. Physical warehouses are at capacity, but orders keep coming in. Many ecommerce companies are using containers—in port—as ad hoc warehousing. This is also causing delays in container turnaround time.

Shipping companies are looking at ways they can get around the congestion problem and improve their shipping times to meet demand. Many of the carriers who have relied exclusively on container shipping are starting to adjust their operations so they have more shipping flexibility.

But that is not something that will happen overnight, nor is it something that will solve the immediate shipping logjam.
