5 Data Center Trends in 2021

Emerging technologies are defining the needs of public and private data centers, including edge computing, AI, IoT, data analytics, and process-intensive High Performance Computing, or HPC, which is typical of supercomputers used to do large-scale computations. Although all data centers are unique, they will all be affected by some combination of these trends gaining ground in 2021 and beyond.

Let’s look at five universal data center trends for 2021 and see how they are connected.

1. Data Center Spending and Growth

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted data centers. Budgets and spending were two areas seriously affected during 2020.

The global data center systems market is rebounding in 2021 with an increase of 7 percent to $237 billion, according to a recent Gartner Forecast. Expansion is taking numerous forms.

The largest data center operators are expanding primarily through new builds and mergers and acquisitions. Colocation and enterprise data centers are expanding onsite. Many data center operators are investing in multi-facility data center campuses, which enable them to:

  • Expand their footprint vertically
  • Reduce land acquisition costs
  • Increase potential infrastructure
  • Meet edge computing needs associated with IoT platforms, analytics, and low latency

Edge computing growth is a trend for 2021 as AI, 5G, and IoT projects populate the edge. The number of servers deployed at the edge will double to 4.7 million by 2024, according to Omdia Research. More racks—specifically high-density racks—will be required to handle processing, storage, and power needs.

2. Rack Density and Power

Data center design, capacity planning, cooling, and power provisioning all focus on the power density per rack (kilowatts [kW] per cabinet). As compute-intensive workloads such as AI and IoT increase, so does data rack density. More than 71 percent of respondents say their high-density racks now fall into the 10-19 kW range, according to the 2020 Uptime Institute survey. Increasing server rack density also affects:

  • Data center footprints
  • In-rack Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
  • Copper/fiber cable run management
  • Maintenance
  • Cooling costs

This has led to another growing trend of liquid cooling and new approaches for airflow management.

3. Liquid Cooling and Airflow Management

Submer_Immersion_Cooling_SmartPodX-scaled.jpgMost researchers estimate that cooling and ventilation makes up between 30 and 55 percent of energy consumption for the average data center. Cooling systems and air flow management aren’t cost-efficient even in new builds. As data server density increases, CPUs and GPUs inching past 300 watts get hotter. This impacts:

  • Performance
  • Failure rates
  • Maintenance
  • Energiaköltségek

Air flow management will continue to be the dominant approach to cooling, as part of rack-mounted equipment best practices. But liquid cooling is more common in 2021.

Direct liquid cooling (DLC) targets the hottest CPUs and GPUs consuming more than 300 watts. That is important to enterprise, colocation, and other data center providers struggling to increase efficiencies and performance, while lowering the data center’s energy consumption and cost per kilowatt-hour.

The two dominant types of DLC are immersion cooling and chassis-level immersion technology. These may reduce a data center’s energy usage by 60 percent or more. All major server Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) now offer liquid-cooled server SKUs. These chassis-level units fit inside racks for easier serviceability.

4. Pay-Per-Use Hardware Models

Server racks for IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and analytics models need to be located where they can deliver fast, actionable analytics. The public cloud continues to grow. Providers battle for enterprise converts, despite possible issues with data security and needing low latency at the edge.

All of this is causing the major server and hardware vendors to feel the squeeze from hyper-scale cloud providers such as AWS, Google, and Azure. And some hardware OEMS such as Cisco, Dell, HPE, IBM, and Lenovo are offering an alternative: consumption-based pricing for data-center infrastructure. This gives organizations a cloud-like pay-per-use model that gives them complete server racks delivered and used on-premise in their own adatközpont, at edge locations, or in colocation facilities.

The three major cloud providers are competing with these offerings by providing data rack capacity that is located at private data centers, central offices, and onsite within the organization. This gives companies the best of onsite and cloud approaches, with more control. But it also increases their onsite maintenance needs when racks are moved, serviced, and modified.

5. Data Center Talent Demands

Global data center staffing needs will grow from two million to nearly 2.3 million by 2025, according to the Global Data Center Staffing Forecast 2021-2025.

The interconnection of all these data center trends is much clearer when seen from the perspective of striving for growth that leads to better business outcomes. The other important thread is that all these trends will rely more heavily on lift machines as density increases and efficiency and safety goals must be met.
