2013 Data Center Efficiency & Trends Part II

Data Center Trends Graph

Data Center Efficiency Survey ServerLIFT® LLC conducted an anonymous survey at a large technology trade show to determine data center efficiency specific to equipment handling practices. Respondents were asked to complete a questionnaire consisting of six questions that related to daily operations in their data center. All survey information was anonymous to encourage participant honesty and minimize bias. Trends: The data indicated that using ServerLIFT® products was far more efficient method of handling IT equipment than using generic warehouse lifts; translating into significant cost savings for data centers. For the purpose of this survey, data center efficiency was defined as the number of man-hours required to install a server in […]

IBM, Data Center Design & Inefficiency

Data Center Design Inefficiency

Like so many things taken for granted, data centers have a side to them that few people know of. IBM’s insight into their data center management and infrastructure comes across as interesting, puzzling and perhaps even absurd. Data Center Design According to IBM around 80% of data centers were created before the dotcom era. With almost three fourths of the number of data centers built before 1985, they are in need of rebuilding. This affects the duties of those responsible for data center design and data center management today. We’ve come a long way from when Bill Gates remarked that 640K ought to be enough and looks like nothing’s enough […]

Colocation: When to Shut Down the Server Room and Open up the Cloud

When to Shut Down the Server Room and Open up the Cloud

What exactly are Colocation Services? The common calling card of the Network Administrator of the past was to: “Keep your users close, keep your servers closer.” They would break into a sweat at the thought of hosting mission critical servers in another building, let alone another state or by another company entirely. However, except for the largest of corporations, the current trend is to move away from locally hosted servers and server farms to co-located data centers, also referred to as Managed Hosting Solutions. Many Network Administrators & Network Engineers feared that the advent of these remote hosting solutions would rule their jobs obsolete, but just the opposite is true […]

Futuristic Data Center Efficiency Ideas

Five Data Center Efficiency Ideas of the Future

Five Futuristic Data Center Efficiency Ideas 1. Building a Data Center Under a Cathedral There are a ton of jokes we could make about building a data center under a church, but we’re gonna pass. Taking data center efficiency to a whole new level, the Atos data center was built inside a former bomb shelter 30 meters under the historic Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki, Finland. This concept isn’t new, as various other data centers have been built inside caves and bomb shelters deep underground to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and security benefits. Additionally, the Atos Data Center will be using the nearby sea water to cool its servers. […]

電力使用効率(PUE)

Power Usage Effectiveness PUE ServerLIFT

Your Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) In 2007, The Green Grid published its very first white paper regarding energy efficiencies in data centers. “Green Grid Metrics: Describing Data Center Power Efficiency” proposed the use of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Datacenter Efficiency (DCE), now Data center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE), as a means to enable data center operators to quickly estimate the energy efficiency of their data centers, compare the results against other data centers, and determine if any energy efficient improvements could be made. Since 2007 PUE has been massively adopted by the data center industry and is now used as a standard in measuring power usage. According to the Uptime […]
