\u00a9 Hewlett-Packard Company (HP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\nThe Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) was founded in a one-car garage in July of 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. The two became friends while attending Stanford University. Their <\/span>origin story<\/span><\/a> is referred to as \u201cthe original Silicon Valley startup\u201d by the company in recognition of its roots\u2014with many similar endeavors launching in the years to follow by tech entrepreneurs also working in northern California. <\/span>A plaque<\/span><\/a> sits outside that garage today commemorating its unique impact on history. These days Hewlett Packard Enterprise is a server manufacturer and enterprise technology leader based in San Jose. HP to HPE: A Timeline<\/span><\/h2>\nHewlett and Packard got out of the garage fairly quickly. They moved into Palo Alto offices in 1940 and incorporated by 1947. Known as HP at the time, the company <\/span>went public<\/span><\/a> in 1957.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nThe 1960s was one of its greatest periods of growth. 1966 was the year HP began manufacturing computers. The <\/span>Hewlett-Packard 9100A<\/span><\/a>, launched in 1968, was hailed by <\/span>Wired Magazine<\/span><\/i> in December 2000 as the very first personal computer. (When it was first sold, HP called it a \u201ccalculator.\u201d But, as <\/span>Bill Hewlett said<\/span><\/a>, \u201cIf we had called it a computer, it would have been rejected by our customers\u2019 computer gurus because it didn\u2019t look like an IBM. We, therefore, decided to call it a calculator and all such nonsense disappeared.\u201d)\u00a0<\/span>\n\n\"Hewlett\n\nThis was only one of many innovations introduced by HP. The HP 2100 was a series of 16-bit minicomputers built on magnetic-core memory and running <\/span>BASIC<\/span><\/a> programming languages. The line grew and was renamed \u201cHP 1000\u201d in 1977, now positioned as a real-time computing system, able to manage mission-critical applications. HP released the first handheld scientific electronic calculator in 1972 and a series of technical desktop computers in <\/span>1975<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nInkjet and laser printers for desktop computers hit the market in 1984. Even today, the HP name is associated with these \u201call-in-one\u201d machines, which were steadily developed into the 90s to include copying, faxing, and scanning capabilities. More direct-to-consumer products were released in the following decade. These included computers, storage, and imaging services.\u00a0<\/span>\n\nFour major spinoffs and\/or mergers defined HP\u2019s path in the late 20th century and into the 21st. In 1999, the $8-billion spinoff of <\/span>Agilent Technologies<\/span><\/a> included about 30,000 employees and products ranging from software to electronic test and measurement equipment. It generated the largest initial public offering (IPO) in Silicon Valley history. In 2001, HP merged with Compaq, making them a global player not only in computers and printers, but also in servers. Another major acquisition was the purchase of Palm, Inc. in 2010 for $1.2 billion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n

HPE and HP Split<\/span><\/h2>\nArguably the biggest reorganization in HP\u2019s history was its split into two distinct companies, announced in 2014. The division between Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP Inc. followed years of layoffs and restructuring as profits steadily declined. Today <\/span>HPE<\/span><\/a> is an IT giant with a focus on business solutions including servers, storage, networking, financial services, and support.
