Moving a fully loaded cabinet seems so much simpler than having to unpack everything, move it all, reassemble the components, and cross your fingers that everything has been configured correctly and still works as it should.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is this the best way to move them?\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two answers. The first is \u201cNo, unless your equipment was specifically designed for movement while fully loaded.\u201d The second is \u201cNo, unless you have a device designed specifically for moving fully loaded racks or cabinets.\u201d Never attempt a populated server move with a non-safety-certified solution or with a warehouse\/material handling lift.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you have rack-moving device that is designed to move fully loaded cabinets, then you can move them to your heart\u2019s content. Here at ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, we are in the midst of developing such a product, but otherwise, to the best of our knowledge, none exist on the market that are safely up to the task.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempting to move full cabinets and racks fully loaded without the right equipment could result in many catastrophic problems:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thin cabinet legs or casters could bend or even break off.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiny casters could get stuck in precarious positions as you move over raised floors or ramps.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weight of a fully populated rack may exceed the weight limits of any elevators.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traversing ramps might be impossible. The angle would almost certainly cause an accident.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your delicate equipment could be damaged in transit, because forklifts are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meant for finesse jobs.<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire, populated rack could tip over, damaging it, other racks, the facility infrastructure, or worse yet people.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in most circumstances, it\u2019s better not to move server cabinets and racks without unloading most of the equipment first.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completing a server rack move doesn\u2019t have to turn into a big headache. Here is a guide to the best way to move server racks and cabinets that should minimize your frustrations, even if you have to disassemble and reassemble everything.<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Make a plan before you touch anything.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to do a lot of work before you disconnect the first cable.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak with your team, including any energy efficiency consultants you may work with, to devise a strategy for the move. You will need to answer several questions:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will the move be carried out?<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How far do you need to move?<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What equipment will be needed to make the move successful?<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which team members are in charge of which tasks?<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will the new configuration support your cooling and energy-efficiency solutions?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the problems you expect to encounter?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mit\u00e4 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you leave installed in the rack and what must be removed?<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you pack and move the equipment that was taken out of the rack?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though this may seem tedious, developing a strong plan can prevent unnecessary mistakes, injuries to workers, and severe damage to equipment.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you use visual charting methods to map out your configurations, you should update your design diagrams and ensure that there are no critical dependencies that might have been overlooked. <\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Double-check power, space, and weight requirements.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you move anything, make sure the destination location can support the equipment you are relocating. The last thing you want to do is move a heavy server rack or cabinet to its new home, only to have it crash through a raised floor tile that wasn\u2019t intended to support the load.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors to consider are whether the new destination offers the same power as your current location, whether the new space will need a different configuration for cooling or energy efficiency, and if there are any obstructions that may be in the way.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Back up all important data and gather equipment warranties.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a plan is great, but even the best plans can go awry. Plan for the possibility of losing some data or damaging a few pieces of equipment.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can anticipate and prepare for these kinds of problems. Make sure all important data is securely backed up on servers that will not be moved, and put together a folder with equipment manuals and warranty information so you have these documents readily available if and when you need them.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Label <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as you disassemble it.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re moving server racks and cabinets, you can easily lose track of where cables, mounting rails, power supplies, and even larger pieces of hardware fit into the big picture. You don\u2019t want to get to your new location and realize you aren\u2019t sure how everything fits back together.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good rule of thumb? If it moves or comes apart, put a label on it. Come up with a clear and solid labeling system. Many data centers use color-coded labels, but it won\u2019t hurt to add more labels than necessary. As you work, double-check your updated design diagrams to make sure each label matches its corresponding place on the reference chart.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Write down the exact position of each piece of hardware in the cabinet.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your design diagram is detailed enough to include where each component goes inside of the rack or cabinet, you may be able to use it as a reference. If some components are missing from the chart or are not assigned to specific locations, you should write down exactly where each piece came from during disassembly. Otherwise, during reassembly, you may run out of space in the cabinet and have to start over.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the rack unit numbers of the posts as a way to map out where each piece of hardware goes.<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Equipment is simply too delicate and expensive and aisles are too narrow to risk the massive damage that forklifts can cause.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not ask your employees to manually lift servers or cabinets. Lifting heavy, expensive components without the proper tools could result in serious injuries or equipment damage.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, opt for specialized data center lifting devices such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/fi\/data-center-lifts\/sl-500x\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SL-500X Powered Lift by ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These kinds of server-handling devices are built to efficiently move servers and other critical hardware with a minimum of effort and a maximum of safety.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, mounting rails, cable management hardware, and PDU\u2019s may be left on the rack if properly secured, wrapped, and protected.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to factor in the safety of the data that is stored on each server, not just the servers themselves. Pack any servers that contain sensitive data into locked containers and establish a chain of custody for responsibility so that there can be no question of data security during the move.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Take the opportunity to clean, inspect, and reorganize equipment.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a staging area for de-populating your server racks or cabinets, you should inspect each component as you remove it.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving parts tend to sustain the most damage during transportation (and in general daily use). You should inspect all sliding rails for dents, bends, or insecure attachments. You may also want to replace fans and other worn components. Be sure to clean and blow away dust from the insides of cabinets before you begin reassembly.\u00a0 Keep zipper bags, pouches, or containers on hand to store and organize any small fasteners and hardware needed for each piece of equipment &#8211; and label those too!<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cables are looking frayed, or you see some opportunities for a more efficient configuration, this is the perfect time to swap in new cables and try out different organizational options.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Remove old hardware or cables in the new location.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem like a hassle to inspect overhead tracks and check under the floor for old cables, but doing so before you move your server racks and cabinets is your best bet. Remove old cables and organization systems to make way for the new ones.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Carefully reassemble all the components.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you spent enough time planning the move and labeling all hardware components, reassembly should go smoothly.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it doesn\u2019t, don\u2019t panic. That\u2019s why there\u2019s still another step on this list.\u00a0<\/span>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Anticipate a few errors.<\/span><\/h2>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you labeled meticulously, you might experience difficulty fitting each component into a cabinet exactly the way it was before. Additionally, server equipment is so sensitive that even slight\u00a0jostles can disrupt critical connections and create problems when you try to boot up the newly reconfigured system.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re moving server racks and cabinets, anticipate having some downtime on the other end of the move while you address issues. Unfortunately, those issues do sometimes come in the form of error messages and system crashes.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do find yourself having to perform a complete recovery, be assured that this is far better than the worst-case scenario.
