\"\"Imagine this common scenario: Your workers need to install a server or another piece of heavy IT equipment high up in a rack. They pack the server onto a data center lift, drive it over to the rack, and park it. They then grab a ladder, place it off-center from the rack, where it won\u2019t block the data center lift or interfere with the installation process, and climb up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The data center lift brings the server to the correct height and alignment for sliding it into the rack, but that\u2019s only part of the battle. Your worker(s) now have to physically push a 200+ lb (91 kg) server from the lifting platform into the appropriate slot. They have to do this delicately, so as not to damage the heavy and fragile IT equipment. They also have to be careful not to misalign the rails, or they\u2019ll have to stop and readjust. And, they\u2019re doing this <\/span>all while balanced on a ladder.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It\u2019s enough to make any environmental health and safety (EHS) officer lose sleep. Even if workers manage to pull this off once or twice, it\u2019s unlikely they could continue safely climbing ladders and pushing hundreds of pounds horizontally all day long if they have a lot of new IT equipment to install. Eventually, a mistake is bound to happen, and either someone will get hurt or your equipment will be damaged. Or both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, EHS officers typically have a rule that prohibits workers from pushing heavy loads above shoulder height. And especially not while standing on a ladder. It\u2019s an unsafe working environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
