In addition, the ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-brand EB2Z IBM Lift Tool is an approved, specified solution for handling and installing IBM Power Systems equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we\u2019ve laid out precise instructions for installing an IBM Power Systems server using a ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> machine in 4 simple steps. For the safest possible outcome, we strongly disagree with this advice, and endorse the use of qualified lifting machinery with any server or other IT infrastructure weighing above 50 pounds, as outlined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/SLTC\/etools\/electricalcontractors\/materials\/heavy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSHA<\/a>. Using a lift designed exclusively for data centers, and not relying on manual lifting, results in a 100 percent accident-free environment, as reported by our customers.<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"margin: 30px 0 0!important;\">Quick Reminders Before Installing Your Server<\/h2>\n<p>Before we move ahead, a couple of quick reminders. IBM Power8, Power9, and enterprise server installation instructions generally call for two tools: a Phillips screwdriver and a flat-head screwdriver. It is also necessary to prepare the rack. First, identify a rack with (up to) four units of space. Plan to place heavier, larger units into the bottom of the rack. Plan to fill the bottom of the rack first, as a best practice for operator and equipment safety. Attach any necessary mounting hardware to the rack itself.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, ensure you\u2019ve gone through the proper setup for the EB2Z Lift Tool. Remove any objects or obstructions around or under the ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> unit, and clear the path to the rack. All manuals with instructions for lift operation can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/de\/resources\/support-materials\/manuals-and-instructions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hier<\/a>. Finally, follow all electrostatic discharge instructions provided by the manufacturer.<\/p>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 55px;\">NOTE: All steps below that are marked with an asterisk refer to functions only available with the EB2Z Lift Tool or another ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-brand data center lift. If using the IBM EB3Z Lift Tool (a non-ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> product more commonly used in warehouses and at construction sites), these functional and safety-essential steps will not be possible.<\/div>\n<h2>Step 1: Load the server for installation onto the lift<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"post-unordered-list\">\n<li>Position the Lift Tool, placing it on level, even ground near your IBM Power Systems server.<\/li>\n<li>Engage the Stabilizer Brake by pressing down on the red pedal. This should lock into place, remaining in the down position and holding the Lift Tool in the same spot.*<\/li>\n<li>(If using a ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-brand electric lift tool such as the SL-500X<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> lift, power it ON by inserting the key and turning clockwise.)<\/li>\n<li>Raise the platform to the desired loading height. This should lock into place, remaining in the down position and holding the equipment Lift Tool in the same spot.*<\/li>\n<li>Raise the platform to the desired unloading height.<\/li>\n<li>Adjust the platform angle as desired for leveling the server side-to-side or rail-to-rail (the EB2Z Lift Tool uses a SmartTILT adjustment feature to accomplish this task).*<\/li>\n<li>Raise the platform to a height where the equipment nailheads are just above the installation rails.<\/li>\n<li>(If using a ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-brand electric lift tool such as the SL-500X<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Lift, power it OFF by inserting the key and turning counter-clockwise.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22453 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Video-Screenshots-Server-Install-300x169.png\" alt=\"inserting a server into the server lift\" width=\"307\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Video-Screenshots-Server-Install-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Video-Screenshots-Server-Install-1024x575.png 1024w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Video-Screenshots-Server-Install-1536x863.png 1536w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Video-Screenshots-Server-Install-2048x1151.png 2048w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Video-Screenshots-Server-Install-16x9.png 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul class=\"post-unordered-list\">\n<li>Shift the Lift Tool\u2019s platform shelf towards the rack and rails to provide support for the server into the rack.*<\/li>\n<li>Extend the rails out to line up with nailheads.<\/li>\n<li>Extend the slide rails forward until they click twice into place.<\/li>\n<li>Carefully lift the server and tilt it into position over the slide rails so that the rear nailheads on the server line up with the rear slots on the slide rails.(<em>Note: the EB2Z Lift Tool and other ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-brand machines are the only lifts that include the RS-500X<sup>TM<\/sup> Rail Lift attachment to mechanically support the server at your desired tilt angle. This is a dangerous risk; even a small tweak to the neck or back can put a data center team member out of commission for days.\u00a0 Manually lifting a server weighing above 50 pounds also directly contradicts federal safety regulations. Handling sensitive, expensive servers by hand is extremely dangerous to both the equipment and the operators. Yet, lifting and installing servers by hand remains, unfortunately, the status quo implication in most server manufacturer\u2019s install instructions.<\/li>\n<li>While IBM only specifies\/recommends manual hand-cranked Lift Tools (the EB2Z ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-brand data center lift model, and the EB3Z GenieLift-brand construction site lift), hand-cranked lifts should only be considered when handling servers very infrequently and only one or two servers at a time. That is because hand-cranking with any regularity is likely to put operators at serious risk of repetitive strain injuries.<\/li>\n<li>In light of point #2 above, ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> analyzed dozens of data center operations when designing our product line.
