Those with the best foresight on trends (including AI, multicloud, edge computing, and digital transformation) are the most successful.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a consequence, all infrastructure management tools and processes are coming under close scrutiny by data center management, to ensure budgets are spent wisely. Optimization of design is a tough task. Previously, we talked about the basics of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/blog\/the-hidden-impact-of-server-rack-design\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">server rack design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/blog\/best-practices-for-rack-mounted-equipment-in-data-center-design\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overall layout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and implementation, including cooling, power, and flooring structures.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the third piece in this series, we address data center architecture on a higher level and look at how today\u2019s leading subject-matter experts in IT infrastructure are making it work. It\u2019s a common misconception that the growing popularity of edge networks and multi-tenant sites is somehow killing the data center. In fact, we\u2019re seeing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifelinedatacenters.com\/data-center\/data-center-industry-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the opposite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/business\/millennials-and-gen-z-here-save-data-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AFCOM State of the DC 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these are currently the most sought-after cloud competencies:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">53 percent \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data center, cloud, colocation connectivity expertise<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41 percent \u2014 Cloud architects<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 percent \u2014 Cloud security professionals<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/manage\/be-aware-these-5-data-center-trends-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the field foresee continued reliance on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/why-us\/rack-like-a-pro\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two of them have contributed to this series of articles: Chris Boyll, TAC Manager at Flexential, and A.D. Robison, VP Data Center and IT Services, North America at <a href=\"https:\/\/rahi.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rahi<\/a>. Both run strategy and implementation for major colocation facility chains\u2014and colocation is one of the primary methods for creating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/documents\/3900994\/top-10-emerging-trends-affecting-digital-infrastructure-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agile growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as described below.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within that same <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/doc\/reprints?id=1-68D6JPZ&amp;ct=190214&amp;st=sb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gartner report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 62 percent of respondents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">say they are pursuing an initiative or program to make their business more digital.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> IT professionals are finding that they\u2014and their company&#8217;s business managers\u2014are more determined than ever to use the latest digital technology to gain a competitive advantage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaustubh Das, Vice President, Product Management and Strategy for the Computing Systems Product Group at Cisco, says: \u201cIn today\u2019s digital world, IT needs to operate with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vastly different and more demanding set of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/cisco\/2019\/06\/24\/what-is-the-future-of-the-data-center\/#3d34eefd4068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">user expectations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, cost still remains king when making decisions about potential digital advancements. Here are some of the most popular (and affordable) methods for optimizing data center architecture and design:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upgrading An Existing Data Center<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-20027\" src=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_46039375_xl-2015-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"inside of a data center needing serverlift\" width=\"132\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_46039375_xl-2015-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_46039375_xl-2015-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_46039375_xl-2015-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_46039375_xl-2015-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_46039375_xl-2015-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/>Going all-new in terms of equipment isn\u2019t reasonable for most DC budgets. Instead, IT managers blend the current tools with any upgrades deemed absolutely necessary. When these decisions involve racks and cabinets, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy modification<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is always a better mousetrap out there, and I\u2019m sure somebody has thought of a better way to do things, but all of the racks that I\u2019ve seen are very similar and haven\u2019t changed much in recent years. You get different amounts of pass-through space between them, different ways to ground them and mount them, but most are very similar,\u201d says Chris Boyll. Instead, the focus tends to shift to heating, cooling, redirecting the air, and replacing antiquated servers.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-Location or a Third-Party Facility<\/span><\/h2><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19959 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/depositphotos_36104125-stock-photo-cartoon-illustration-round-window-in-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"we don't do square around here cartoon\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/depositphotos_36104125-stock-photo-cartoon-illustration-round-window-in-294x300.jpg 294w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/depositphotos_36104125-stock-photo-cartoon-illustration-round-window-in-768x783.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/depositphotos_36104125-stock-photo-cartoon-illustration-round-window-in-24x24.jpg 24w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/depositphotos_36104125-stock-photo-cartoon-illustration-round-window-in-48x48.jpg 48w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/depositphotos_36104125-stock-photo-cartoon-illustration-round-window-in.jpg 1005w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Businesses can benefit from the option of a co-location facility when tech is being developed more quickly than the infrastructure that was\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">originally built to support it. This decision is an easy one at the end of a DC\u2019s functional lifespan, or at a time of rapid expansion. Rack structure and layout in a colo facility is, by design, highly adaptable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robison notes that they never want the rack to be the limiting factor. \u201cWe\u2019d rather have the limiting factor be what they paid the most money for\u2014and that\u2019s the electrical structure, first costs for mechanical cooling . . . we\u2019d hate for customers to have to pay for that all over again because the technology has changed to the point where it\u2019s no longer adequate.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colo managers are also accustomed to working with clients of all sizes and varying resources. \u201cOne customer sent us their equipment, and it didn\u2019t have rails. We found an option that worked and set up the rails ourselves. We do what we have to do, to make it happen,\u201d says Boyll. Rack integration also takes place off-site with regularity. This proved to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/cloud\/cloud-killing-data-center-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">untrue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, a whole new generation of highly skilled IT professionals grew into new roles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many have adopted a hybrid approach. Hybrid multicloud is a combination of on-premises, public, and private cloud services. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delltechnologies.com\/en-us\/what-we-do\/multi-cloud.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">93 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of companies are looking to adopt the use of more than one cloud for their services.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cloud complements and supports traditional data centers, as opposed to replacing them. Racks and cabinets now must support equipment that is even more expensive, dense, specialized, and heavy.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A move to incorporate cloud services frequently includes an in-depth assessment of existing software, apps, and platforms. Up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/infocus.dellemc.com\/denise_partlow\/multi-cloud-what-does-good-look-like\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2c-onZiz4wIVC__jBx1ShQpAEAAYBCAAEgJA8fD_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of current infrastructure may be deemed ready for retirement. More and more intelligence is being pushed to the \u201cedge\u201d of the network, to the actual end device. The edge is outside both the cloud and the data center. It is the creation of new internet \u201cendpoints\u201d in decentralized nano-data centers. This \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/archives\/2017\/05\/02\/edge-densities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">micro-data center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d approach creates new opportunities and challenges.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many edge data centers are remote, so they must run efficiently without a lot of maintenance. In edge DCs, server racks are modified in the following ways:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3389137\/how-the-server-rack-in-your-converged-infrastructure-can-speed-up-your-edge-computing-deployment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plug-and-play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Full rack systems help to maintain speed and efficiency for the enterprise.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operators must build racks to hold dense, multilayer equipment supporting large amounts of data in a very small space.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racks must travel well, often over long distances, with rugged construction to withstand international transportation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build Your Own Data Center<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-20028\" src=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_22999782_xl-2015-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"modern interior of a server room\" width=\"323\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_22999782_xl-2015-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_22999782_xl-2015-1024x686.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_22999782_xl-2015-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_22999782_xl-2015-1536x1028.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Depositphotos_22999782_xl-2015-2048x1371.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/>This is arguably the most expensive of the options listed in this article, but it is not an uncommon choice for businesses concerned about security or equipment sensitivity. \u201c15 years ago we could build a data center for $3 million per megawatt, [and today] that is just out the window . . . even with the most rudimentary systems, says Robison. &#8220;You\u2019re looking at between five and ten million dollars per megawatt to build a fairly simplistic data center footprint these days.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New storage and servers must be organized according to industry standards and whatever is required for optimal airflow, power, cooling, access, and connectivity. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sphomerun.com\/data-center-sales-and-marketing-blog\/what-does-it-cost-to-build-a-data-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equipment renewal process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is undertaken every two to three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design Implications for the Modern Data Center<\/span><\/h2><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no perfect solution, in my mind, that accommodates everybody\u2019s needs. We always need to be open to the possibility that something needs to change. If the change makes sense, we can always make it a standard feature. Or, it stays a one-off solution.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; A.D. Robison<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor many of our clients, the need for a data center isn\u2019t changing. What they need is a data center space that mirrors their aggressive and strategic digital growth.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Chris Boyll<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter which modern design strategy is chosen, two core questions remain the same.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you manage differentiated and geographically spread-out compute, storage, and networks?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you do it safely?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is as much a physical challenge as it is a data challenge. It\u2019s helpful, therefore, to have all operational tools and protocols up to date. This includes guidelines on the physical handling of server equipment.
