Jeffrey Bain is a Technical Services Account Manager with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mccollisters.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCollister\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Transportation Group. Bain has handled data center relocation services\u2014primarily transportation needs\u2014for McCollister\u2019s for over two decades. He notes: \u201cIt\u2019s important to understand, right off the bat, which resources are required for your data center relocation services. With Bain\u2019s assistance, we are focusing on the physical requirements of an IT infrastructure move below. This will help to ensure you are partnering with the right vendors and agencies for your move. This will keep your migration team and your equipment safe and secure, and finally, it will assist in the creation of contingency plans for the unexpected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #1: Plan Ahead<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best planning results in the least disruption to your business<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe pre-planning is the most important element,\u201d says Bain. Many of the clients he works with are in planning mode for a move for a year (or more) before working on the final steps. They ask the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataspan.com\/blog\/data-center-migration-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> early on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is my budget? My timeline?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I have a site audit completed?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I have an up-to-date equipment inventory?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will we move all of the equipment, or should some be decommissioned\/upgraded\/replaced?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will we do one large move, or work in phases, starting with lower-priority assets?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early considerations must include scope, timing, cost estimates, and early formation of the project team and task assignments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #2: Partner with Accredited Data Center Relocation Companies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21742 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RelocationPlanning-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"The Four Rules of Data Center Relocations\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RelocationPlanning-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RelocationPlanning-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RelocationPlanning-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RelocationPlanning-2-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/RelocationPlanning-2-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Just like with any move, hiring an outside company to handle a relocation project makes everything go more smoothly. If you do hire a moving company, it\u2019s important to find one with the right knowledge and specific experience in relocating data centers. A moving or logistics company that focuses on moving household goods or general freight doesn\u2019t necessarily know how to handle data center equipment properly. \u201cSending out household movers who have never touched a server or computer equipment before is a big problem. It probably won\u2019t go well.\u201d Bain says he\u2019s seen those mistakes firsthand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IT infrastructure expert will partner with your own Project Manager and your internal technical team. The vendor should bring in any necessary specialized equipment, including normal or expedited transportation, pallet jacks, straps, and lifts. \u201cWe\u2019ll do things like get a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/da\/data-center-lifts\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ServerLIFT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> device<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rented or brought out to a facility,\u201d says Bain, and they\u2019ll check on existing features such as docks, elevators, and stairs. \u201cWe carry, in our climate-controlled trucks, a heavy-duty plexiglass-like material to distribute weight. We also have metal threshold plates for gaps in elevators and doorways.\u201d The right relocation company can also tackle wiring needs, cabling, climate, and humidity requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of pairing with an expert are most obvious when the client does not know how to move a data center or has little experience in the field. \u201cThe clients who haven\u2019t made these moves as often will rely on us to get them through it,\u201d says Bain. Specialized experience will offset risks and unforeseen expenses, and minimize any downtime or data losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #3: Don\u2019t Try to Do Everything At Once<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Even the smallest transfers can have surprising delays. \u201cIn some instances, if the equipment doesn\u2019t go back up as expected in the new location, we\u2019ll bring it all the way back to the original\u00a0location to make sure it goes back up. The power might not be right, something doesn\u2019t work, so they\u2019ll bring it back and reinstall it all. They figure out what went wrong, and then do it all again. It\u2019s a contingency plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relocation companies typically carry out the relocation in three phases: 1) taking equipment apart at the point of origin, 2) transporting the equipment, and then 3) moving in equipment at the new location. These three phases are multiplied for bigger jobs requiring multiple moves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A phased approach may be the smartest way to handle your move.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rule #4: Don\u2019t Consider the Job Complete When the Equipment Is Loaded<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work isn\u2019t over, even after your hardware is set up and plugged into its new home. Here\u2019s what\u2019s left:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the punch list one last time to ensure all immediate tasks are completed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decommission and restore any remaining equipment at the site of origin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dispose properly of anything that is no longer needed, especially if it requires special an environmentally safe disposal processes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also smart to set quarterly and annual reviews evaluating operations, processes, energy usage, and upcoming infrastructure updates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achieving Data Center Relocation Success<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21743 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WalkingandPlanning_ServerRelocation-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"The Four Rules of Data Center Relocations\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WalkingandPlanning_ServerRelocation-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WalkingandPlanning_ServerRelocation-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WalkingandPlanning_ServerRelocation-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WalkingandPlanning_ServerRelocation-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/serverlift.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/WalkingandPlanning_ServerRelocation-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>These days, Bain says most of his jobs are helping people move their IT equipment out of proprietary facilities and into colocation facilities. The data mirrors this report: The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journal.uptimeinstitute.com\/uptime-institute-10th-annual-data-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uptime Institute\u2019s annual survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows about half of data center workloads moving to off-premises DCs in 2020. There\u2019s still a great range, however, in the types of jobs McCollister\u2019s is tackling. \u201cWe do a wide variety of moves. Someone may be moving a single server from Massachusetts to California.
