Although all data centers are unique, they will all be affected by some combination of these trends gaining ground in 2021 and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at five universal data center trends for 2021 and see how they are connected.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Data Center Spending and Growth<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted data centers. Budgets and spending were two areas seriously affected during 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The global data center systems market is rebounding in 2021 with an increase of 7 percent to $237 billion, according to a recent<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2021-04-07-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-it-spending-to-reach-4-trillion-in-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gartner Forecast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Expansion is taking numerous forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest data center operators are expanding primarily through new builds and mergers and acquisitions. Colocation and enterprise data centers are expanding onsite. Many data center operators are investing in multi-facility data center campuses, which enable them to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expand their footprint vertically<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce land acquisition costs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase potential infrastructure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet edge computing needs associated with IoT platforms, analytics, and low latency\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edge computing growth is a trend for 2021 as AI, 5G, and IoT projects populate the edge. The number of servers deployed at the edge will double to 4.7 million by 2024, according to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omdia Research<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More racks\u2014specifically high-density racks\u2014will be required to handle processing, storage, and power needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Rack Density and Power<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data center design, capacity planning, cooling, and power provisioning all focus on the power density per rack (kilowatts [kW] per cabinet). As compute-intensive workloads such as AI and IoT increase, so does data rack density. More than 71 percent of respondents say their high-density racks now fall into the 10-19 kW range, according to the 2020 Uptime Institute<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journal.uptimeinstitute.com\/rack-density-is-rising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Increasing server rack density also affects:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data center footprints<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-rack Power Distribution Units (PDUs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copper\/fiber cable run management<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/blog\/the-hidden-impact-of-server-rack-design\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Server rack design<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintenance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooling costs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has led to another growing trend of liquid cooling and new approaches for airflow management.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Cooling systems and air flow management aren\u2019t cost-efficient even in new builds. As data server density increases, CPUs and GPUs inching past 300 watts get hotter. This impacts:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failure rates<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintenance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy costs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air flow management will continue to be the dominant approach to cooling, as part of rack-mounted equipment<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/serverlift.com\/blog\/best-practices-for-rack-mounted-equipment-in-data-center-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best practices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But liquid cooling is more common in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direct liquid cooling (DLC) targets the hottest CPUs and GPUs consuming more than 300 watts. That is important to enterprise, colocation, and other data center providers struggling to increase efficiencies and performance, while lowering the data center\u2019s energy consumption and cost per kilowatt-hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two dominant types of DLC are immersion cooling and chassis-level immersion technology. These may reduce a data center\u2019s energy usage by 60 percent or more. All major server Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) now offer liquid-cooled server SKUs. These chassis-level units fit inside racks for easier serviceability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Pay-Per-Use Hardware Models<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Server racks for IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and analytics models need to be located where they can deliver fast, actionable analytics. The public cloud continues to grow. Providers battle for enterprise converts, despite possible issues with data security and needing low latency at the edge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this is causing the major server and hardware vendors to feel the squeeze from hyper-scale cloud providers such as AWS, Google, and Azure. And some hardware OEMS such as Cisco, Dell, HPE, IBM, and Lenovo are offering an alternative: consumption-based pricing for data-center infrastructure. This gives organizations a cloud-like pay-per-use model that gives them complete server racks delivered and used on-premise in their own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3599213\/what-are-data-centers-how-they-work-and-how-they-are-changing-in-size-and-scope.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at edge locations, or in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/3614624\/how-to-shop-for-a-colocation-provider.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colocation facilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three major cloud providers are competing with these offerings by providing data rack capacity that is located at private data centers, central offices, and onsite within the organization. This gives companies the best of onsite and cloud approaches, with more control. But it also increases their onsite maintenance needs when racks are moved, serviced, and modified.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Data Center Talent Demands<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global data center staffing needs will grow from two million to nearly 2.3 million by 2025, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uptimeinstitute.com\/webinars\/webinar-the-people-challenge-global-data-center-staffing-forecast-2021-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Data Center Staffing Forecast 2021-2025<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interconnection of all these data center trends is much clearer when seen from the perspective of striving for growth that leads to better business outcomes.
